SI House & Garden Franchise

Solar Institute House & Garden Franchises enable intelligent and customized conversion of the exterior home and garden, creating a more comfortable, sustainable habitat less dependent on heating & cooling, saving on energy costs.

Heating and cooling can account for up to 45% of the home’s power use. Reducing energy demand is the starting point for any home improvement endeavour. If the building is not designed to lessen its energy requirements, it will not be possible (or more difficult) to provide adequate renewable energy to allow the building to operate. Significant reduction in energy use can be achieved by implementing Passive Heating & Cooling strategies to existing buildings, with proper attention to the local climate, building orientation and design.

SI House & Garden Franchise - Exterior Re-Design Features

Adjustable Shading - Awnings

Window shading can be designed to let as much sun as possible into your home in winter (when the sun is low in the sky) but keep the sun out in summer (when it's higher in the sky). The exact design of the window shading will depend on the home’s orientation, the amount of glazing, and the amount of direct sunlight desired.

Shutters

Exterior shading is greatly preferred over interior shading as it is important to keep the solar radiation/heat from entering the building. Traditional interior shading (blinds / drapes) merely block the glare of the sun, but still allow the heat to enter the interior space.

Cool / White Roofing

A cool roof reflects and emits the sun’s energy as light back to the sky instead of allowing it to enter the building below as heat. In many climate zones, a cool roof can substantially reduce the cooling load of the building, providing several direct benefits:

Increased occupant comfort

Reduced air-conditioning use, resulting in energy savings typically of 10 – 30%, and

Decreased roof maintenance costs due to longer life

Reflective roofing also mitigates global warming, simply by reflecting the sun’s energy as light back to the atmosphere.

Garden

Shading needs to be provided in the way of landscaping and foliage. Deciduous trees are effective as they block the sun in the summer when it is not desired and allow sun penetration during the winter. Vines on more transparent “fence like” elements are effective as they too bear leaves to shade in the summer, and keep their leaves until later in autumn when sun is again desired. Vines are often used on trellises to achieve seasonal variation in the opaqueness of the overhangs. The exact location of trees and vines will depend on the home’s orientation and design.

Planting the right trees at strategic locations around the house can save up to 30% in energy use. (U.S. Forest Service Centre for Urban Forest Research).
